Dog Treat Recipe Richmond VA

I love cooking for my dog Hannah. (She quite likes it when I do too!) This recipe is what makes my signature treats. They are treats I share often with family and friends. They are always a hit amongst our canine friends… and even some of the people ones too… not to name any names (my husband). They are simple with clean ingredients, which I love. And they are tasty, which Hannah loves. The best part is how versatile they are! This is a variation from a recipe for doggie breath mints I found several years ago. Since then I have changed it a bit and added all kinds of different ingredients. So feel free to be creative! (Switch out apples for blueberries or pumpkin etc. Just make sure whatever you are using is dog friendly!) My dog LOVES peanut butter and apples, so this version is one of her favorites!

Several people over the years have asked me for the recipe. So, here it is!

First gather the ingredients:

  • 2.5 c Old Fashioned Oats

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/4 cup of water, plus 1 tablespoon (more water as needed to form the dough)

  • 3 tablespoons melted coconut oil (unrefined extra-virgin is best)

  • 1 apple

  • 2 TBS all natural pure peanut butter (LOOK AT THE INGREDIENTS! Make sure there is no xylitol. This is highly toxic to dogs. I use peanut butter that only has peanuts!

Then Start Cooking:

1. Preheat the oven to 325° F

2. Add oats to a blender and pulse to a flour like consistency.

3. Add apple to food processor to chop up finely.

4. In a large bowl whisk together, egg, water, and oil. Add oat flour and stir to combine.

5. Add apple and peanut butter. Then stir in well.

6. Knead dough a few times until the ingredients are well mixed.

7. Using your hands or a spoon scoop out and roll one inch balls of dough. If you have a smaller dog you can make them smaller. If you have a bigger dog you can make them bigger.

8. Place mints about 1/4-inch a part on a parchment lined or non-stick cookie sheet. Take 2 fingers and smoosh the balls so they are flat (about 1/8" thick).

9. Bake 35-40 minutes, or until golden and crispy.

10. Allow treats to cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container.

* Tip: For dogs with allergies to chicken products, substitute one large egg with 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, or smashed banana.
